Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has said the establishment of an Air Defence Unit of the Nigerian Army’s 83 Division in the state will strengthen security and enhance the protection of critical national assets.

Oborevwori stated this on Thursday while inspecting facilities and ongoing work for the establishment of the unit in the state, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon.

The governor said the newly established 83 Division, which covers Delta, Edo and Bayelsa states, would boost the Army’s capacity to respond effectively to security threats across the three states.

He explained that Delta was selected to host the Air Defence Unit because of its strategic location and proximity to the airport.

Oborevwori said the state government had provided land for a temporary facility while plans were underway to secure a permanent location for the unit.

He also disclosed that between 300 and 400 military personnel were expected to be deployed to the state within the next few weeks.

“We need to support the security agencies because without security, there cannot be development,” the governor said.

According to him, improved security in Delta had contributed to a decline in armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.

He added that the new military formation would play a significant role in protecting oil and gas infrastructure as well as other critical national assets.

“The most important benefit is to secure national assets and the people. That is the truth. If you don’t have all these security formations here, you know how it will be,” Oborevwori said.

The governor assured that the state government would continue to support the military and other security agencies by providing the facilities needed for their operations.

He directed the Commissioners for Housing and Lands to commence the assessment and scoping of the temporary site, including identifying existing structures requiring attention.

Oborevwori, who was accompanied by the Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Nigerian Army, Major General Thompson Ugiagbe, and Commander, 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ibrahim Buhari, reiterated that security remained a priority of his administration.

He said the state would sustain its collaboration with the military and other security agencies to protect lives, property and critical national assets.

The governor also recalled his recent visit to the Trans-Forcados pipeline area, where he said residents expressed satisfaction with the improvement in security.

He urged the military and other security agencies to maintain their collaboration with the state government and other stakeholders to consolidate the gains recorded in the state.
