Operatives of the Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested six suspects linked to the murder of the traditional ruler of Ishinkwo Community in Onicha Local Government Area, HRH Eze Josephat Ikegwu.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, who said the breakthrough followed sustained intelligence-led investigations.
According to the statement, police operatives also recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with eight rounds of live ammunition during the operation.
Ukandu said the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Hope Okafor, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring justice, stressing that no individual involved in criminal activity would be allowed to escape accountability.
He assured residents that the Command remains committed to tackling violent crime and improving security across Ebonyi State.
The late traditional ruler, Eze Josephat Ikegwu, was reportedly killed by gunmen who shot him inside his residence on the night of April 1 while he was resting with his wife. The attack was carried out through his bedroom window.
The Chairman of Onicha Local Government Area, Ikechukwu Ogbuofia, had earlier confirmed the killing, while police authorities said investigations were ongoing at the time.
The incident came weeks after another monarch in the state, Eze Francis Igwe, was abducted and killed in March, raising concerns over rising attacks on traditional rulers in the region.
