EL-RUFAI WARNS: WITHOUT MANIPULATION, ELECTORAL ACT WILL END THEM

By: Fasasi Hammad
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has sharply criticised the Senate for rejecting the mandatory electronic transmission of election results, claiming the move is intended to facilitate post-election manipulation.
Speaking with the media , El-Rufai expressed regret that he could not return to Nigeria earlier to join the protest led by African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and other opposition leaders.
“I would have joined Mr. Peter Obi and other party leaders in demonstrating at the National Assembly to demand the restoration of real-time, mandatory transmission of results from polling units,” he said.
El-Rufai stressed that electronic transmission is the most effective method to prevent election manipulation, explaining that rigging occurs not at polling units but during collation.
“The only way to stop manipulation is at the collation centers. Rigging doesn’t happen at the polling units; it happens when votes are aggregated,” he noted.

He also lamented that while the House of Representatives approved the provision for mandatory electronic transmission, the Senate is allegedly blocking its implementation.
“This provision would have improved the credibility of our elections. But we know why the ruling party and the government oppose it—they understand they cannot win fairly,” he alleged.
El-Rufai added that post-voting result manipulation is the ruling party’s only leverage. “Their only chance of success is to tamper with results after voting,” he said.
Earlier on Monday protesters, led by Peter Obi, gathered at the National Assembly in Abuja to oppose the Senate’s decision and call for urgent electoral reforms to safeguard future elections.
