FCT POLICE IDENTIFY OFFICERS ACCUSED OF N40,000 EXTORTION IN ABUJA

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has identified officers accused of allegedly extorting ₦40,000 from a resident along the Wuye-Utako Road, near Salem Church, Abuja.

The command said the officers depicted in a video circulating on social media had been identified and were currently in custody.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Adeh said the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, had ordered an investigation into the allegation after the video surfaced online.

“The officers depicted in the video have been identified and are in custody,” the statement said.

The video, which began circulating widely on social media around August 24, featured a man who alleged that a police officer collected ₦40,000 from him on August 20, 2026, despite verifying that his documents were complete.

The complainant also shared footage showing a receipt and a conversation he reportedly had after returning to the checkpoint.

According to Adeh, the command has invited the complainant to its headquarters to make an official statement to assist the investigation and possible disciplinary proceedings.

She urged the complainant to contact the command’s Public Relations Officer through 07038979348 or 08180382808.

The Commissioner of Police reiterated that the command would not tolerate extortion, abuse of authority, misconduct or unprofessional behaviour by its personnel.

“Any officer found culpable after due investigation will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary and legal action in accordance with extant laws and regulations,” Sanusi said.

The command also urged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct and provide relevant information that could assist ongoing investigations.

The latest allegation comes amid repeated complaints about alleged police extortion at checkpoints in Abuja.

In June 2026, Sanusi warned officers against extorting commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators, saying any officer found engaging in such conduct would be treated as a thief rather than a police officer.

In July, the command detained four officers and ordered their orderly room trial after they allegedly abandoned their posts, mounted an unauthorised checkpoint and extorted about ₦52,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Musa Aliyu, SAN.

The FCT Police Command said it would take appropriate action against any officer found culpable after due investigation.
