The Federal Government has announced plans to extend the Presidential Executive Order supporting local pharmaceutical manufacturing by another two years.

The extension, if approved, will run until March 2029, with the government saying the move is aimed at strengthening medicine security and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported drugs by 70 per cent.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, disclosed this while speaking at the opening of the 8th Nigeria Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Expo (NPME) 2026.

Salako said the existing executive order, introduced by the Bola Tinubu administration to support domestic pharmaceutical production, is expected to expire in March 2027.

He explained that the Federal Government had concluded plans to extend the policy until March 2029 as part of efforts to expand local drug manufacturing.

“The Federal Government has indicated plans to extend the Presidential Executive Order supporting local pharmaceutical manufacturing by another two years,” Salako said.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening domestic pharmaceutical production, describing it as a pathway to medicine security, healthcare resilience and economic development.

The minister added that increasing local manufacturing capacity would help reduce the country’s reliance on imported medicines while strengthening the pharmaceutical sector.
