By: Muftau Fatimo
The Federal Government has urged the Ondo State Government to adopt and implement the new tax reform acts.
Reports indicate that the Federal Government commenced implementation of the new tax policy on January 1, 2026.
Speaking at a public lecture in Akure on Monday, held as part of activities marking Ondo State’s 50th anniversary, the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, also called on the state to enact the State Tax Harmonisation Law to address illegal and nuisance taxes.

Oyedele emphasised that Ondo State must reform its fiscal policy to align with that of the Federal Government.
Charging the state government, he urged it to implement the new tax reform acts and enact the State Tax Harmonisation Law to address nuisance and illegal taxes. He also suggested that Ondo State could host the national Tax Ombud office for the South West region as a way of promoting taxpayer rights and protection.
Oyedele further stated that, beyond implementing the reforms, the state should introduce an annual Tax Accountability Report to be issued to every taxpayer and develop a comprehensive tax and fiscal policy framework to guide spending, revenue generation, and debt management.
He added that, to promote inclusive development, Ondo State should support each local government council in creating an economic development plan and establish a dedicated portal on the state’s website where all local governments can publish their long-term economic plans, annual budgets, and audited financial statements to enhance financial transparency and accountability.
“Ondo State hosts 71 kilometres of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, a landmark project set to transform Nigeria’s Atlantic coastline. Other major federal projects in the state include the Akure–Ore dual carriageway, the Akure–Ado Ekiti Road, and the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Akure.
“The Ondo Deep Sea Port located in Araromi is also gaining traction. Just last month, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa received the port’s revalidated licence, marking a significant milestone toward its completion. When finished, it is expected to become West Africa’s deepest seaport, with a natural draught of about 18 metres.”
In his keynote address, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa said Ondo State had recorded steady progress across all sectors over the past 50 years and expressed optimism that the next five decades would be driven by economic diversification, technology and innovation, human capital development, and strong institutions.
“Fifty years on, Ondo State has undergone remarkable transformation. Despite existing challenges, we have made notable progress and gained renewed confidence. Our economy is gradually shifting from primary production to value addition and industrial processing. Flagship projects such as the Sunshine Free Trade Zone, the Golden Ceramics Industrial Plant, the Ethanol Plant in Ore, and the Ondo Deep Sea Port reflect our commitment to job creation, industrial diversification, and investor confidence.
“The future of Ondo State will be anchored on economic diversification, innovation and technology, human capital development, and strong institutions.
“Tourism is also being strategically repositioned as a key growth sector through the development of our coastline, eco-tourism resources, and rich cultural heritage, creating fresh opportunities for local businesses and community participation. We remain committed to investing in education, skills development, and youth empowerment, recognising that human capital is our most valuable asset.”
