Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has reportedly left the country following his defeat by left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential election.

According to US media reports, Bolsonaro is heading to the United States, where President Donald Trump had endorsed him in his bid to unseat the incumbent president.

Lula had earlier accused Washington of working with the Bolsonaro family to help them return to power. Reuters also reported alleged efforts by the US State Department to support their political comeback.

Flávio Bolsonaro is suspected of leaving Brazil to avoid possible arrest as he faces a Supreme Court investigation over allegations of corruption, money laundering and currency evasion.

The Brazilian government cancelled his passports after he failed to comply with an order to surrender the documents.

The Federal Police took the action after a 24-hour deadline issued on Monday by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes expired.

Results from the presidential election’s second round showed that Lula, 81, defeated the 45-year-old senator by more than four million votes.

In September 2025, Flávio’s father, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, was sentenced to 27 years in prison after being convicted of plotting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election.

Jair Bolsonaro had also moved to the United States after refusing to concede defeat to Lula in 2022, when Joe Biden was president.
