Flooding has destroyed houses and farmlands in Pututa and several other communities in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Other affected communities include Tswako, Likpata, Godangi and Ekko.
The Deputy Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola, said Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited the affected communities to sympathise with residents.
The governor confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident, although several properties were destroyed.
“No life was lost, but properties were destroyed,” AbdulRazaq said.
He announced a ₦10 million emergency support package for residents of Pututa to provide food, drinking water and medicines.
The governor also directed the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assess the extent of damage caused by the flooding and determine the immediate needs of affected residents.
The incident occurred amid a Federal Government flood alert issued on September 28, warning residents in 24 states, including Kwara, of possible flooding between September 27 and October 10, 2026.
The alert followed forecasts of heavy rainfall, rising river levels, saturated soil and increased surface runoff across several parts of the country.
According to the advisory, communities in the affected states were classified into critical, high and moderate flood-risk categories.
Kwara was among the states with communities identified as being at critical risk during the period, alongside Benue, Kogi, Niger, Adamawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo.
The Kwara State Government also said it would continue discussions with relevant Federal Government authorities over the dredging of the River Niger as part of efforts to address the recurring flooding in affected communities.
“The government will continue to engage with the Federal Government on the dredging of the River Niger to find a lasting solution to the flooding,” the state government said.
