KANO DELEGATION URGES FG TO RELEASE N5B SINGER MARKET RELIEF FUND

A delegation of Kano business leaders and top government officials has appealed to the Federal Government to expedite the release of the ₦5 billion relief fund approved for victims of the Singer Market fire disaster.
The appeal was made during a meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa.
The delegation said the visit was aimed at reminding the Federal Government of its commitment to assist thousands of traders who lost their businesses and sources of livelihood in the devastating market fire.
According to the statement, the timely release of the intervention fund would provide much-needed relief to affected traders and support efforts to revive commercial activities at the market.
During the meeting, members of the delegation thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the intervention and appealed for the prompt completion of the disbursement process so beneficiaries could access the funds without further delay.
The delegation included the President of the Association of Kano Business Community, Alhaji Sabiu Bako; the Commissioner for Finance, Dr Ismail Aliyu Danmaraya; APC National Ex-Officio, Muhammad Jamu Yusuf; Chairman of Singer Market, Barrister Junaidu Muhammad Zakari; and businessman, Alhaji Kabiru Adamu Gano.
In his response, Akume assured the delegation that their request had been noted and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting victims of the Singer Market fire.
Vice President Kashim Shettima had earlier announced the approval of the ₦5 billion intervention during a reception held to welcome Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into the All Progressives Congress.
The event marked Yusuf’s defection to the APC alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen on January 26, 2026.
At the event, Shettima also disclosed that the Progressive Governors’ Forum had pledged an additional ₦3 billion to assist victims of the fire.
“President Bola Tinubu has approved the release of ₦5 billion to the Kano State Government as palliative for this incident. In addition, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma, has pledged ₦3 billion to support the victims of the Singer Market fire,” the Vice President had said.
