The Katsina State Police Command says it will prosecute a neighbour of the family of an eight-year-old boy alongside five other suspects arrested in connection with the child’s abduction in Katsina metropolis.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Aliyu, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the suspects were apprehended by the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit.

According to Aliyu, the boy, whose identity was withheld, was abducted on May 13 while returning from an Islamic school. He added that the kidnappers contacted the family the following day and demanded a ransom of N50 million.

He further stated that after negotiations, the family paid N17 million before the victim was eventually released.

He said, “On May 13, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m., the victim, whose identity has been withheld, was abducted while returning from an Islamic school. The following day, the kidnappers contacted the family and demanded a ransom of N50 million. After negotiations, N17 million was eventually paid for the victim’s release.

“Following the report, operatives of the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit immediately launched an investigation. Acting on credible intelligence, the operatives tracked and arrested six members of the syndicate on May 23, 2026.”

Aliyu identified the suspects as Nura Aliyu, 39, alleged to be the mastermind and a neighbour to the victim’s family; Abubakar Aminu, 37; Ibrahim Muhammad, 51; Iliyasu Sani, 51; Abubakar Muhammad, 27; and Abdullahi Isma’il, 30.

Aliyu noted that the suspects confessed to the crime and identified another suspect who is currently at large, adding that exhibits were recovered from the suspects.

While interrogating the suspects, they confessed to the commission of the offence and mentioned one Abdul, currently at large, as their accomplice. A manhunt is ongoing for the fleeing suspect.

“During the investigation, 1 Peugeot 307, 1 Boxer motorcycle, and a cash sum of N7,500,000, being part of the ransom money, were recovered from the suspects as exhibits, among others,” Aliyu added.

He concluded that the suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigations.

The Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, Ali Fage, commended the operatives for the swift operation and assured the public of the command’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes.

“The suspects will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation. Further developments will be communicated in due course,” Aliyu concluded.

The media reported on Saturday that the Ondo State Police Command rescued 12 persons abducted by kidnappers in Isua Akoko, headquarters of Akoko South-East Local Government Area of the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the victims were abducted in the early hours of Saturday after two commercial buses travelling from Benue State to Ibadan were reportedly ambushed by armed men.
