Abducted Kebbi Judge Regains Freedom After One Week in Captivity

Justice Faruku Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court has regained his freedom after spending one week in the custody of his abductors.

The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed on Monday that the judge, who was abducted from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area on July 26, had been released earlier in the day.

According to the police, his release was confirmed by both his family and the Kebbi State Ministry of Justice.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said although the kidnappers demanded a ransom, the command maintained its stance against paying ransom.

He added that security agencies have intensified efforts to track down those responsible for the abduction and urged members of the public to provide useful information, assuring that all tips would be treated confidentially.

The police also appreciated residents and other security agencies for their cooperation during the judge’s captivity, reaffirming the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

A family member confirmed that Justice Bunza returned home safely on Monday and expressed gratitude for his safe return.

The relative thanked the Kebbi State Judiciary, security agencies, the state government, friends, and residents for their prayers, encouragement and support throughout the ordeal.

However, the family declined to disclose the circumstances surrounding the judge’s release, saying details would be made public at a later time.

Justice Bunza’s abduction by suspected bandits sparked widespread concern and renewed calls for stronger security measures in Kebbi State, highlighting the persistent threat of kidnapping and banditry in parts of Northwest Nigeria.

His release has brought relief to the judiciary, his family, and residents of the state who had awaited news of his safe return.
