KWARA URGES TIMELY TAX PAYMENT TO BOOST IGR

The Kwara State Government has urged residents and other eligible taxpayers to pay their taxes promptly, saying improved compliance is essential to boosting the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and funding sustainable development.
The government said every tax payment represents not only a legal obligation but also an investment in the state’s growth and the well-being of its citizens.
The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), Shade Omoniyi.
According to Omoniyi, the call comes as governments at different levels continue implementing tax reforms aimed at creating a fairer and more equitable tax system.
“Every tax remitted is not just a legal obligation but also an investment in the sustainable development and better quality of life for all Kwarans,” she said.
She explained that the ongoing reforms are designed to reduce the tax burden on low-income earners while ensuring that individuals with greater financial capacity contribute a fair share toward national and state development.
Omoniyi specifically encouraged high-net-worth individuals in the state to comply promptly with their tax obligations, noting that their contributions are critical to strengthening the state’s revenue base.
She said increased tax compliance would enhance the government’s capacity to deliver sustainable development projects while promoting fairness within the tax system.
The KW-IRS chairman reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to a transparent, efficient and technology-driven tax administration that makes tax compliance easier and more convenient for taxpayers.
She, however, warned that while the service would continue to encourage voluntary compliance, enforcement measures would be applied where necessary to ensure adherence to relevant tax laws and protect compliant taxpayers.
Omoniyi reiterated the agency’s commitment to providing continuous taxpayer support, improving tax administration and increasing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, urging residents to fulfil their civic responsibility by paying their taxes promptly.
