LAGOS DEMONSTRATES REGIONAL SOLIDARITY AS LASEMA SUPPORT OPERATIONS IN AJUWON BUILDING COLLAPSE

In fulfilment of its commitment to regional safety and inter-state cooperation, the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has deployed the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to support ongoing search, rescue, and recovery operations following the collapse of a building at OGS Bus Stop, Baale Road, Ajuwon, a border community between Ogun and Lagos States.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, 27th July, 2026, involved a mixed-use building comprising two ground-floor shops and residential apartments above.
Acting immediately on Mr. Governor’s directive, LASEMA activated its emergency response plan and deployed its elite Response Team and heavy rescue and recovery equipment to Ajuwon early this morning, 28th July, 2026, to complement the efforts of the Ogun State Government and other stakeholders.
LASEMA is working in close collaboration with Ogun State Government officials, led by the Commissioner for Works, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Police Force, the Ogun State Fire Service, the Amotekun Corps, and other relevant responders to ensure a coordinated and efficient operation. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing as teams remain committed to accounting for every trapped victim.
Speaking on the intervention, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, said, following a preliminary structural assessment, LASEMA confirms that an adjoining bungalow was severely compromised by the impact of the collapse and now poses a significant safety risk. Consequently, controlled demolition will be carried out to prevent secondary collapse and to safeguard emergency responders and residents within the immediate area.
“This deployment reflects the vision of Mr. Governor that disaster knows no boundaries. Lagos, as a Centre of Excellence and a First Responder State, has both the capacity and the responsibility to support our neighbours in times of distress. This action aligns with international standards on mutual aid and cooperative disaster governance across Western Nigeria”, he added.
The Lagos State Government extends its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to all survivors. It also commended the professionalism, dedication, and synergy demonstrated by all responding agencies on the ground.
LASEMA, however, appealed to members of the public to remain calm, avoid the immediate vicinity of the incident, and allow emergency personnel unrestricted access to carry out operations safely and efficiently.
The Agency also urged property owners, developers, and all stakeholders to strictly comply with building codes, obtain all necessary approvals, and conduct periodic structural integrity tests to prevent avoidable disasters.
Lagos State remains committed to partnering with the Federal Government, NEMA, and all South-Western States to build a safer, more resilient, and responsive region for all citizens.
