Freedom Park, Lagos Island, will be temporarily closed to the public for one week to allow for renovation, clean-up, fumigation and other maintenance activities.

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture announced that the closure will take effect from Monday, October 5, to Sunday, October 11, 2026.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, on Monday, the temporary closure was necessary to enable the government to undertake scheduled maintenance and upgrade works aimed at improving the facility.

Oyekan-Ismaila said the exercise was also designed to enhance visitors’ experience while preserving the historic park.

She said, “The temporary closure is to allow for scheduled maintenance and upgrade works aimed at enhancing visitor experience and preserving the historic facility.”

The ministry explained that the works formed part of efforts to improve facilities at the park and maintain a conducive environment for members of the public who visit for recreational and cultural activities.

It added that the rehabilitation would cover sections of the facility requiring maintenance and upgrades.

Similarly, the management of Freedom Park, in a notice to members, said the improvement works were aimed at enhancing the overall experience of visitors and members.

The management said the exercise would include facility upgrades, beautification, general maintenance and improvements to areas and services intended to provide greater comfort, convenience and value to visitors.

It noted that the temporary closure was specifically required to facilitate comprehensive cleaning, fumigation and related maintenance works.

“Freedom Park Lagos will be temporarily closed from Monday, 5th October to Sunday, 11th October 2026 to allow for comprehensive clean-up, fumigation and related maintenance works,” the notice stated.

The management assured members of the public that normal activities would resume after the completion of the exercise.

The ministry also assured the public that the park would reopen immediately after the renovation and maintenance works.

Oyekan-Ismaila apologised for any inconvenience the temporary closure might cause and appealed to members of the public for their understanding.

The ministry said the exercise was part of broader efforts to preserve Freedom Park while improving the overall experience of visitors.

Located on Lagos Island, Freedom Park is a major recreational and cultural centre that hosts various events and activities.
