LASTMA DEPLOYS RECOVERY TEAM AS CONTAINER TRUCK CRASHES ON KARA BRIDGE

A container-laden truck was involved in a road crash on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday afternoon, September 15, 2026, further worsening traffic congestion along the busy corridor.
The incident occurred as the truck was travelling out of Lagos, with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deploying personnel and recovery teams to the scene to manage traffic and facilitate the evacuation of the affected vehicle.
The Digital Media and Communications Team of LASTMA was also at the scene, providing aerial coverage of the recovery and evacuation operation.
The latest incident came amid ongoing rehabilitation work on the Kara Bridge, where damaged expansion joints are being replaced. The Federal Government commenced the two-week repair project on September 8, with the work scheduled to continue until September 22. The repairs have already reduced the available carriageway and contributed to recurring congestion along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Earlier on Tuesday, another 40-foot container-laden truck was involved in a separate crash at the exit of Kara Bridge. LASTMA reported that the truck suffered brake failure before ramming into demarcation blocks and other vehicles. The resulting traffic backlog extended towards New Garage as recovery operations commenced.
Emergency responders later confirmed that seven vehicles were involved in that morning crash, including the container truck, a Toyota Hilux, an interstate bus, a Hyundai Odyssey, a Sienna, a Toyota Highlander and a Mitsubishi Hilux. Radio Nigeria reported that no life was lost and no injury was recorded in that particular incident, with all the affected vehicles subsequently removed from the carriageway.
A separate crash was also reported later on Tuesday on Kara Bridge inward Mowe, near ENYO Filling Station and around the expansion joint. According to LASTMA, another 40-foot containerised truck suffered brake failure and was involved in a lone crash, leaving three people injured. The injured persons were taken to an emergency centre for treatment, while the affected carriageway was temporarily cordoned off and counterflow measures introduced.
LASTMA personnel, police officers from Isheri and Federal Road Safety Corps officials were deployed to manage traffic and support emergency operations during the later crash. Recovery and evacuation operations were subsequently carried out to clear the affected roadway.
The multiple incidents have compounded an already difficult traffic situation around Kara, Berger, OPIC, Mowe and adjoining sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Traffic reports indicated that congestion had spread towards Berger and, at points, further along the corridor as motorists were forced to share available lanes during the recovery and bridge-repair operations.
LASTMA and traffic officials from Ogun State were involved in efforts to manage the situation and restore movement. Authorities also worked to create alternative passage for motorists by opening a section previously restricted because of the ongoing bridge rehabilitation.
The latest incidents have again highlighted the traffic challenges created when heavy-duty vehicles are involved in crashes along the Kara corridor, particularly while bridge rehabilitation works are restricting available lanes.
Motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were advised to exercise caution and remain patient while traffic officials and emergency responders worked to clear obstructions and restore normal vehicular movement.
