Lagos State University (LASU) has confirmed the death of Boluwatife Joseph Otabor, a student who succumbed to injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.

Otabor, a History and International Studies undergraduate in the Faculty of Arts, died on June 2, 2026, after undergoing medical treatment for injuries suffered in the attack.

In a statement released on Thursday by the university’s Centre for Information and Public Relations, LASU described the incident as heartbreaking and extended condolences to the deceased student’s family, friends, and colleagues.

The university said the attack occurred off-campus on the night of May 29, when Otabor and several friends were reportedly assaulted by armed robbers in Iba.

According to LASU, it immediately provided support through the Office of the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs and closely monitored the student’s condition while he received treatment.

Following his death, university representatives met with his family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), and relevant security agencies.

LASU stated that it is collaborating with law enforcement authorities to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the incident and bring those responsible to justice.

The university expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for the peaceful repose of Otabor’s soul, describing his passing as a painful loss to the institution and its community.
