LEKKI IMAX CINEMA ATTACK: TWO DEAD, SECURITY OFFICER ARRESTED

Two people have been confirmed dead following an attack at IMAX Cinemas in Lekki, Lagos State, on Friday night, August 28, after a man armed with a machete and knife reportedly attempted to gain access to the facility.
The incident caused panic among patrons and staff after security guards prevented the suspect from entering the cinema.
Eyewitnesses said the man, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, became violent after he was stopped by the security personnel.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect allegedly stabbed one security guard to death and injured another during the attack.

According to Abimbola, the suspect, who was described as appearing destitute, was later mobbed and died in the process.
“Two people have been confirmed dead,” she said, adding that the police had commenced an investigation into the incident.
The police spokesperson said investigators were working to establish the identity of the assailant and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
She also disclosed that the Chief Security Officer of the cinema had been taken into custody as part of the investigation.
Abimbola said the police would obtain and examine CCTV footage from the premises to determine exactly what happened and establish whether other individuals were involved.
She assured that all circumstances surrounding the incident and the deaths would be thoroughly investigated.
The incident has renewed concerns about security measures at entertainment and recreational facilities, particularly the ability of security personnel to prevent individuals carrying dangerous weapons from accessing crowded venues.
As of the time of filing, the police had not released the identities of the deceased or provided further details on the condition of the injured security guard.
Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
