At least three people have reportedly been killed in separate attacks by militia herdsmen across communities in Guma Local Government Area (LGA), sparking fear among residents and raising concerns about escalating violence.
Local sources said that in Iordye village, Nzorov Council Ward, Terlumum Mpev was killed while working alone on his farm. The attack comes just days after Fada and Kyudan communities in Saghev Council Ward were raided, with two people killed, several injured, and properties looted.
Terlumum’s younger brother, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said his elder sibling was attacked with machetes while trying to stop herders from grazing cattle on his rice farm. “He was just protecting his farm. The herders ganged up on him and macheted him to death. His body has been evacuated for burial,” he said.
He added that residents have long warned about the increasing presence of herders, noting that recent influxes could trigger more attacks. “Authorities must intervene quickly to prevent further loss of lives and property,” he urged.
Meanwhile, in Saghev Council Ward, villages including Fada and Kyudan experienced coordinated attacks, resulting in the deaths of two men. Locals reported widespread destruction, with homes burnt and crops such as grains, yams, and groundnuts destroyed. Villages like Tse Ubagi, Tse Kyundu, Yage, and Agba were also reportedly affected.
A local source said, “The attackers raided shops and homes, destroying crops and livestock. People fled, leaving everything behind. Residents have been urged to suspend business and farming until stability returns. We appeal to authorities and security agencies to urgently address the violence and protect farmers in Guma LGA.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for comment at press time.
