NATIVE DOCTOR ARRESTED AFTER THREE CHILDREN FOUND DEAD IN ANAMBRA RESIDENCE

A woman identified by residents as a native doctor, popularly known as “Ezenwanyi,” has been arrested after three children were found dead at her residence in Umuoduba Village, Ideani, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that four children were discovered unconscious at the premises on Wednesday. While three of the children were later pronounced dead by medical doctors, the fourth is currently receiving treatment in critical condition.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, as police have commenced an investigation into the deaths.
Residents said the discovery, which was made in the early hours of Wednesday, caused panic within the community.
A resident who spoke on the incident said the children, aged between six and 15, were found unconscious inside the woman’s compound, adding that their identities and the circumstances leading to the incident had yet to be established.
“The woman, who also keeps livestock including pigs and poultry, was subsequently taken into custody by operatives of the Ogidi Divisional Police Headquarters in collaboration with community leaders. The remains of the deceased children were evacuated to a mortuary,” the resident said.
Videos circulating online showed the Divisional Police Officer of Ogidi Division, alongside community leaders, local security personnel and the President-General of Ideani community, inspecting the premises after the incident.
The footage showed the suspect leading security personnel around different sections of the compound, including areas identified by residents as shrines and residential spaces, while community members watched from a distance.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect had been taken into custody while the State Criminal Investigation Department would handle the investigation.
Ikenga said police operatives attached to Ogidi Police Station responded immediately after receiving information about the incident and rushed the victims to a hospital for emergency treatment.
“Regrettably, three of the children were certified dead by medical doctors, while the fourth victim is currently receiving treatment in a critical condition,” he said.
The police spokesperson added that the investigation would be thorough, professional and evidence-based, with authorities hoping that the recovery of the surviving child would assist in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He disclosed that the bodies of the deceased children had been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Ikenga condoled with the families of the victims and sympathised with the Ideani community, while urging residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and allow investigators to complete their work.
The command said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
