The Nigerian Navy Ship Delta, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has arrested three suspected drug traffickers and recovered illicit substances as well as about 80,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil in Delta State.
The arrests and recoveries were made during two separate joint operations conducted by the Navy and NDLEA personnel in the Niger Delta creeks between Monday and Tuesday.
In a statement, the Navy said its personnel discovered a large dug-out reservoir containing about 30,000 litres of crude oil during an operation in Oteghele community.
A second operation in Obodo Omadino, Delta State, led to the discovery of another reservoir containing approximately 50,000 litres of crude oil.
The combined volume of crude oil recovered from the two locations was put at about 80,000 litres.
Meanwhile, personnel of NNS Delta and the NDLEA also carried out a joint operation against suspected illicit drug activities in the Warri general area and its environs.
The operation resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of 15 kilogrammes of cannabis, alongside quantities of cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and other suspected illicit substances.
“The suspects and recovered items are presently in custody of the NDLEA for further investigation and necessary action,” the Navy said.
Commenting on the operations, the Commander of NNS Delta, Commodore Shehu Tasiu, said the joint efforts demonstrated the Nigerian Navy’s capacity to tackle multiple forms of maritime and coastal insecurity.
He said the operations addressed threats ranging from crude oil theft and illegal petroleum activities to illicit drug trafficking.
Tasiu described the operations as a significant success in the ongoing fight against oil theft and other criminal activities in the Niger Delta.
He assured that criminal activities within the NNS Delta operational area and the wider Niger Delta region would continue to be confronted professionally.
“Criminal activities in the NNS Delta operational area, and the entire Niger Delta region, will be met with the best professional method under the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas,” he said.
