NAVY RECOVERS 24,000 LITRES OF SUSPECTED STOLEN CRUDE OIL IN RIVERS

The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft and illegal bunkering under Operation Delta Sentinel, recovering about 24,000 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Navy said the operation was carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny following credible intelligence about suspected plans by criminal elements to establish illegal connections to oil infrastructure in the Bethel Community axis.
According to the Navy, the operation resulted in the discovery of an illegal refining site, two pits containing approximately 24,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil and extensive lengths of hoses allegedly installed to facilitate crude oil theft.

The illegal refining facilities and other materials recovered at the site were subsequently dealt with in line with existing regulations.
The Navy said the operation successfully disrupted an emerging crude oil theft network before it became fully operational, thereby denying criminal elements the infrastructure needed to sustain their activities and cause further economic losses to the country.
In a separate operation, the Navy also intercepted about 17,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in Rivers State.
The Director of Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder intercepted a speedboat carrying the suspected illegally refined petroleum product along the Onne-Okrika waterways.
He said the interception was made during ongoing anti-crude oil theft operations within the ship’s area of responsibility.
According to him, the recovered speedboat and suspected illegally refined AGO were handled in accordance with established anti-crude oil theft procedures, while efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those behind the illegal operation.
Folorunsho said the latest successes underscored the Nigerian Navy’s continued commitment to dismantling illicit petroleum supply networks, restricting the activities of economic saboteurs and protecting the nation’s critical oil and gas infrastructure.
He added that the Navy remained committed to conducting intelligence-driven operations under Operation Delta Sentinel to combat crude oil theft, illegal bunkering and other forms of economic sabotage, while protecting Nigeria’s maritime environment and strengthening national economic security.
