Saturday’s final will be a rematch of the 2022 WAFCON semi-final clash between the two sides. In that encounter, the Super Falcons were reduced to nine players after receiving two red cards and ultimately lost 5-4 in a penalty shootout.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to take on host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), in a repeat of their clash from the previous edition of the tournament.
The Super Falcons defeated rivals South Africa 2-1, courtesy of a late strike from defender Michelle Alozie, whose long ball evaded all players before resting in the back of the net.
Rasheedat Ajibade scored from the penalty spot shortly before halftime to put Coach Justin Madugu’s team ahead. The defending champions later leveled the score in the 60th minute with a penalty converted by Linda Motlhalo.
With the game almost destined for extra time, Alozie floated a ball into the South African box from midway on the pitch.
Four minutes into stoppage time, a lofted ball was missed by both Nigeria’s advancing players and South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, but it found its way into the net, dealing a crushing blow to South Africa’s hopes.
