The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the death of nine individuals following a boat accident in Zangon Maje Village, located in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The update was shared by the agency via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.

According to NEMA’s Kano Operations Office, the tragic incident occurred on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at around 7 p.m.

The boat, which was carrying 17 passengers—mostly young girls—capsized mid-journey while traveling from Digawa Village in Jahun LGA to Zangon Maje in Taura LGA.

The statement read, “Upon the arrival of the NEMA team at the scene, it was confirmed that eight individuals were rescued alive by local divers, while nine others were unfortunately confirmed dead.

“NEMA, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and local government officials, sensitised the community on the importance of adhering to safety protocols while travelling by water.

“As part of the response efforts, NIWA also donated life jackets to the community.”
