The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution supporting the proposed establishment of State Police Services under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026.

The resolution was passed during plenary on Tuesday following the presentation of a report by the Ad-hoc Committee on Constitutional Review, chaired by former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo.

The committee’s report covered 26 clauses and sectional amendments to the Constitution, which Oluomo presented to the lawmakers for consideration.

Members voted in favour of all the proposed clauses and sections, which included the substitution, insertion and alteration of specific constitutional provisions.

Oluomo subsequently moved a motion for the adoption of the committee’s report. The motion was seconded by Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju and supported by members through a voice vote.

The House Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sherif, later moved that the report be adopted as a resolution of the House. The motion was seconded by the Chief Whip, Omolola Bakare, and unanimously supported by the lawmakers through a voice vote.

Speaking after the passage, the Speaker, Daisi Elemide, said the Assembly had joined other state legislatures across the country in supporting the establishment of State Police.

“The Assembly joined other State Houses of Assembly across the country in supporting the establishment of State Police, and this decision is historic,” he said.

Elemide said the resolution reflected the position of the lawmakers and the people of Ogun State in support of a policing system intended to strengthen security, protect lives and property, and promote social well-being and economic development.

He subsequently directed that a clean copy of the resolution be transmitted to the National Assembly to formally communicate Ogun State’s support for the establishment of State Police Services.
