The Ogun State Government has told all public and private schools in the state to stop holding graduation ceremonies and end-of-term parties. They did this because they are worried about parents and guardians being put under financial pressure.

This order was given in a circular from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, signed by A.A.Bisiriyu, the Director of Education (Private Schools), as reported by the media. The notice, dated June 17, was sent to all school administrators and asked them to follow the instructions right away.It also said that anyone who doesn’t follow the order will face consequences.

It was reported that the ministry made this decision after learning that some school leaders were possibly taking money from parents by pretending to organize these events.

“It has been brought to the notice of the Ministry that some administrators of both public and non-state (private) schools have started extorting parents/guardians under the disguise of organising graduation/end-of-session parties for learners,” the circular stated.

The government stressed that such practices were no longer acceptable in the education sector. The ministry also directed school administrators to widely publicize the directive among parents and stakeholders to ensure full compliance.
