OSUN 2026: NIGERIANS URGE DAVIDO TO REPORT TINUBU TO TRUMP

By:Tajudeen Aminat
Some Nigerians have urged Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, to broaden his political advocacy and raise concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s administration with United States President Donald Trump.
The reactions followed Davido’s warning that he would seek Trump’s intervention if the August 15 Osun State governorship election is allegedly manipulated.
His comment sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians accusing the singer of speaking out only when political issues concern his family or Osun State, while remaining largely silent on wider national challenges.
The critics argued that, given his influence among young Nigerians and his history of commenting on political matters, Davido should also use his platform to highlight issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and governance.
The Media had earlier reported that the singer threatened to involve Trump if anything went wrong during the Osun governorship election.
Reacting on X, several users questioned why Davido had not been equally vocal on other national issues.
One user, @Barnny_sommy, wrote, “Davido always comes over to fight when his family members are involved. For three years, he has remained quiet while Nigerian citizens suffer, only for him to come out now disturbing us.”
Another user, @NC_Okonkwo, asked why the singer did not seek the intervention of former U.S. President Joe Biden over the 2023 presidential election.
Similarly, @stevejioff said it was disappointing that Davido rarely comments on issues affecting Nigerian youths unless they relate to his family’s political interests in Osun State.
Another user, @Mind____Game, criticised the singer for not calling for international attention during incidents involving kidnappings, accusing him of acting out of self-interest.
Also reacting, @Akpomamus186428 described Davido’s stance as selective, claiming he had maintained a cordial relationship with President Tinubu despite criticisms of his administration.
Meanwhile, @TheRealEmma22 encouraged the singer to invite Trump’s intervention immediately, expressing concern over the credibility of the forthcoming Osun governorship election.
The reactions underscore the broader debate over the role of celebrities in national politics and whether public figures should consistently speak on issues affecting the wider population rather than matters linked to personal or family interests.
