A 40-year-old patient, Ahmed Usman, will stand trial at the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Damaturu, Yobe State, for allegedly assaulting a medical doctor, Fatima Umar Gamsa, at the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital.

The case, confirmed by the Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) Yobe State Branch, Dr. Umar Aji, is scheduled for hearing on August 19. Usman has been remanded in custody pending the court date.

According to a hospital management source, the incident occurred after the patient failed to respond when his name was called for a review. His folder was set aside while other patients were attended to.

“After the day’s work, he became agitated, claiming he had been overlooked. He went outside, cut a branch from a tree, and used it to assault the doctor,” the source alleged.

Hospital security personnel intervened, and the matter was immediately reported to the police.

Efforts to speak with Dr. Gamsa were unsuccessful, as she is currently on bed rest recovering from the attack. The ARD said it would refrain from further comment until the court delivers its verdict.
