The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially announced the death of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly collapsed at the Government House in Yenagoa on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement issued late Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki–led National Working Committee described the news as “deeply shocking,” noting that the party had lost “a trusted, faithful party man.”

“The National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and indeed the entire membership of our great party, especially our faithful members in Bayelsa State, are in profound grief,” the statement said.

The PDP praised Ewhrudjakpo as “an honest and consistent politician who believed in and practised politics with principle,” adding that he was “a person of conviction, not convenience; a leader whose life was anchored on belief, integrity and strength of character” until his final moments.

The party extended its condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State, describing the late deputy governor as “a hero of political integrity,” and prayed for the repose of his soul.

Ewhrudjakpo, born on September 5, 1965, served as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State under Governor Douye Diri from 2020 until his death. Before assuming the role, he represented Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly between 2019 and 2020.

His death marks a significant loss to Bayelsa State and the PDP, where he was widely respected for his principled leadership and commitment to public service.
