PDP REP: MANY POLITICIANS FOCUS MORE ON IMPRESSING TINUBU THAN SERVING NIGERIANS

The lawmaker representing Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency of Delta State in the House of Representatives, Benedict Etanabene, has criticised politicians who, according to him, prioritise impressing President Bola Tinubu over serving the interests of Nigerians.
Etanabene, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, made the claim on Saturday during an interview on Arise Television.
His remark stemmed from what he described as the rushed passage of the State Police Bill.
Many politicians are more focused on impressing president Tinubu than serving citizens. They want to be praised by their leaders.
“When people gather, they want to be able to say, look at what I did to that person. Whether what they did was right or wrong is not their concern. What matters is getting the approval and praise of their leaders.
He said many members of the opposition parties would have supported the executive version of the State Police Bill, but stressed that their major concern was whether the proposed legislation could be properly debated clause by clause.
According to him, opposition lawmakers had access to the document and wanted sufficient time to scrutinise its provisions before its passage.
He explained that the earlier version of the bill had been passed months earlier but was withdrawn and reconsidered during the week in question. He said the previous version effectively came to an end before the executive introduced a new version on Wednesday, with lawmakers subsequently informed that it had to be passed by Thursday.
The lawmaker said some members spent the night reviewing the bill clause by clause in an effort to meet the deadline, but noted that such a rushed legislative process was not ideal.
“Some of us didn’t sleep that night because we went clause by clause looking at it and trying to rush it, but that’s not how it is supposed to be. We’re just trying to see how we can meet up with the pattern,” he said.
