POLICE DETAIN OFFICERS OVER ALLEGED ASSAULT ON CIVILIAN IN EBONYI

The Ebonyi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged assault of a civilian by officers attached to the Ohaukwu Police Division in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday, sparked public outrage after images of the injured victim circulated widely on social media.
A viral post on X by user @martins_nwede alleged that an officer identified as Kingsley Esheya was responsible for the assault and called for those involved to be held accountable.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the officers implicated in the incident had been identified, detained and transferred to the state police headquarters on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Hope Okafor.
Ukandu said the Commissioner also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
He added that the officers would face appropriate disciplinary measures if found culpable at the conclusion of the investigation.
According to the statement, “Ebonyi State Command has identified and detained the officers involved in the recent civilian altercation in Ohaukwu LGA. CP Hope Okafor has ordered a thorough investigation. The victim is receiving treatment at FETHA, and the Command wishes him a speedy recovery.”
The police expressed sympathy to the victim, who is currently receiving medical attention at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, and assured the public that the investigation would be transparent, impartial and conducted in accordance with due process.
The command also reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on police brutality and misconduct, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.
