POLICE INSPECTOR DIES IN HIT-AND-RUN CRASH DURING TINUBU’S LAGOS MOVEMENT

A female police inspector, Mercy Bassey, has died after she was reportedly knocked down by a hit-and-run driver while on route-lining duty ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s arrival in Lagos.
Bassey, who was attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station, was reportedly struck by a black Toyota Highlander at the Adekunle Intersection on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Lagos Island, on Tuesday.
A security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred at about 2:30pm while the officer was deployed for route-lining duties in preparation for the President’s movement.
According to the source, the vehicle hit Bassey as she was crossing the road and immediately sped away. Patrol officers reportedly gave chase but were unable to apprehend the driver, whose identity and vehicle registration number remain unknown.
The source said the injured inspector was rushed to the General Hospital, Ebute Metta, for medical attention but reportedly died while awaiting treatment.
“The victim was rushed to General Hospital, Ebute Metta, but later died while awaiting treatment. The corpse will be moved to a morgue in Yaba for preservation,” the source said.
The police are reportedly working to obtain CCTV footage from the area in an effort to identify the vehicle and track down the driver.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details.
“We don’t want to comment on the matter at the moment,” she said.
The incident occurred amid heightened security operations in Lagos as security agencies deployed personnel ahead of President Tinubu’s movement in the state.
Tinubu arrived in Lagos on Tuesday after spending part of his vacation in France. His aircraft landed at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, at about 6:22pm.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the driver involved in the fatal crash and the registration number of the vehicle had not been established.
