The Gombe State Police Command announced on Friday that it has achieved significant milestones in combating criminal activities, including the recovery of two forsaken infants and the apprehension of two adolescents for purported sexual assault.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, who made this revelation in a communiqué, emphasized that the Command is steadfast in its mission to protect lives and property within the state.

He reported that a three-month-old infant was rescued on September 15, 2025, after allegedly being relinquished by her mother, Fatima Abdullahi, 20, from Damaturu, Yobe State, in collusion with an individual named Adama Ibrahim. The child was entrusted to one Fatima Haruna of Liji Quarters, Gombe, who subsequently absconded with the infant.

“The suspects were tracked and arrested at the Trailer Park in Tumfure, Akko Local Government Area. Investigation is ongoing, and they will be charged to court as soon as possible,” Abdullahi stated.

Abdullahi urged community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.

In a separate incident, the Command reported the recovery of a newborn boy abandoned in a carton. DSP Abdullahi disclosed that a tricycle operator, Auwal Abdullahi of Kwadon, delivered the infant to the Gona Police Division on September 9, 2025.

““He narrated that an unidentified woman boarded his tricycle from Madaki Quarters to BCGA Quarters, Gombe. On reaching YD Filling Station Junction, she alighted under the pretence of withdrawing money from a POS. When she failed to return, the rider checked the carton she left behind and discovered a newborn baby inside,” the Police Public Relations Officer elaborated.

Abdullahi noted that the infant was placed in safe custody and subsequently transferred to the Gombe State Social Welfare Department, while inquiries continue.

The Command also confirmed the apprehension of two 14-year-old herders, Danladi Babangida and Samaila Sulaiman, for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl while she was collecting firewood in Pindiga, Akko LGA.

“Following a complaint lodged on September 12, the suspects were arrested and confessed to the crime. The victim and suspects were taken to General Hospital, Kashere, for medical examination. The case is with the Gender Unit of the State CID for discreet investigation,” Abdullahi stated.

He denounced all forms of sexual violence, urging residents to report such incidents without delay to facilitate prompt police intervention.

“The Command will continue to intensify efforts in protecting the vulnerable, ensuring perpetrators of heinous crimes face the full wrath of the law,” he assured.

Cases of child abandonment and sexual violence persist as ongoing issues in various regions of the North-East, including Gombe.

In August 2024, the media reported that police apprehended a father and son in Gombe for allegedly assaulting minors in their vicinity.

Child abandonment has also emerged as a troubling issue in other areas of the country. In April 2024, a woman was arrested in Abuja for neglecting her newborn baby due to financial constraints, a situation that elicited public indignation and highlighted the increasing socioeconomic pressures associated with such occurrences.
