The Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the Rivers South-East senatorial by-election, Senator Olaka Nwogu, has described voter turnout in the exercise as impressive.

Nwogu made the remark while speaking to journalists after casting his vote in Alesa, Eleme Local Government Area, on Saturday.

He said the turnout reflected strong public participation and acceptance of the electoral process.

The candidate also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to depend excessively on technology in the conduct of elections.

He raised concerns over the effective functioning of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and urged INEC to avoid challenges that could disenfranchise voters.

We hear that the BVAS machines are having some challenges, I urge INEC to avoid anything that will lead to disenfranchisement.

“INEC should be more cautious in relying on technology. It is important for our people to vote during the election,” he said.

It would be recalled that the bye-election is to fill the vacuum created by the death of Sen. Barinada Mpigi, the former senator representing Rivers South-East District.
