Wayne Rooney is convinced that Arsenal’s emerging teenage talent, Max Dowman, is poised for a “remarkable future” after delivering an impressive Premier League debut.
Dowman entered the match as a substitute at the age of just 15 years and 234 days during the Gunners’ 5-0 victory over Leeds at the Emirates on Saturday.l

In addition to simply participating, the attacking midfielder had a significant impact in his 26 minutes on the pitch, winning a late penalty that allowed Viktor Gyokeres to convert from the spot.
The former England captain Rooney made his debut for Everton at the age of 16 in 2002 and was only five days shy of his 17th birthday when he briefly claimed the title of the Premier League’s youngest goalscorer by netting a magnificent late winner against Arsenal.
While discussing on his BBC podcast, the Wayne Rooney Show, the Manchester United icon remarked about Dowman: “Competing at that age in the Premier League is astonishing. I recognize that I played at a young age as well, but I believe he is approximately 150 days younger than I was, or possibly more. ”
For Max and his family and acquaintances, I am certain they are all immersed in a fantasy and a fairytale, and the reality may not have fully resonated with them yet. However, it is evident that his future is incredibly promising; he is poised for an extraordinary career.
“Everyone you consult in football keeps mentioning the same name: Max Dowman. ”
Dowman’s teammate, Ethan Nwaneri, continues to hold the record as the youngest player in Premier League history after participating in Arsenal’s 3-0 triumph against Brentford in September 2022 at the age of 15 years and 181 days.
The now 39-year-old Rooney, reflecting on the demands associated with competing at the highest level of football at such a tender age, remarked: “It’s surreal. It’s quite peculiar that one moment you are in the youth squad, and the next you find yourself in the first-team locker room alongside some of your idols.
“It’s something you must adapt to rapidly because it can be quite overwhelming. ”
“Max Dowman looks like a very level-headed lad from everything I’ve seen and you hope he manages to deal with it and understands what’s coming his way very soon.”
