Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting the armed forces and the families of fallen heroes, emphasizing that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
He made the remarks while addressing journalists during the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on Thursday.
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the governor conveyed a message of solidarity to serving military officers.
“The nation stands behind them, and we pray for their safety. We will continue to do everything possible to support them as they risk their lives to protect us,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Today, we remember our fallen heroes, pray for them, and encourage our military personnel. Their sacrifices are not in vain. We also reassure the families that their loved ones will always be remembered.”
The governor described the event as part of nationwide celebrations and urged the military to continue upholding unity and democratic values.
Sanwo-Olu also reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to assisting widows and children of fallen heroes. He assured families of fallen soldiers and ex-servicemen that the government would maintain close collaboration, listen to their concerns, and work to address them.
Highlights of the ceremony included a gun salute, laying of wreaths, and the release of ceremonial pigeons and balloons, symbolizing peace in Nigeria. The governor also signed the condolence register during the event.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 15 to honor and commemorate the sacrifices of past and present military personnel.
