SENATE RECONVENES PLENARY AFTER ANNUAL RECESS

The Senate has resumed plenary following its annual recess, with the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, identifying insecurity, flooding and the rising cost of living as major national concerns.

Akpabio expressed concern over the abduction of Nigerians in Marisa and at Dekera Mosque, stressing that expressions of sympathy alone were insufficient. He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims and strengthen the protection of vulnerable communities.

The Senate President also called on government leaders to ensure that ongoing economic reforms translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akpabio urged political actors to embrace peaceful and issue-based campaigns, noting that no electoral contest was worth the loss of a Nigerian life.

During the sitting, six communications from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were read on the floor of the Senate and referred to relevant committees for consideration.

The communications included requests for confirmation of appointments, approval of the 2026 budget of the Niger Delta Development Commission and the passage of establishment bills, including legislation seeking to create the National Research and Development Fund.

The Senate also paid tribute to the former Governor of Kogi State, Ibrahim Idris, and the late Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani.
