SULE ORDERS ARREST, PROSECUTION OF HEALTH WORKERS OVER ALLEGED SALE OF HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has ordered the arrest and prosecution of health workers accused of selling hospital equipment donated to a healthcare facility in Umaisha Development Area.
Sule described the alleged sale as a serious act of misconduct and corruption, stressing that such behaviour demonstrated a disregard for patients and the healthcare needs of residents.
The governor issued the directive on Wednesday while inaugurating eight commissioners, special advisers, permanent secretaries and board members at the Government House in Lafia.
He directed the Commissioner for Health, Dr Gaza Gwamna, to investigate the allegation and ensure that anyone found culpable faces prosecution.
Sule said the equipment was donated by Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, the lawmaker representing Umaisha/Ugya Constituency in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, who reportedly purchased the items with his personal funds.
According to the governor, the lawmaker returned to the facility days after donating the items and discovered that hospital officials had allegedly sold them.
Sule described the development as unacceptable, saying government would not tolerate actions capable of undermining healthcare delivery in the state.
He directed the Health Commissioner to submit the findings of the investigation by the end of the week.
The directive followed a confrontation on Monday between Sa’ad and staff of General Hospital, Umaisha, over the alleged disappearance of the donated equipment.
In a video circulated on social media, the lawmaker questioned hospital officials over the whereabouts of 50 orthopaedic mattresses, more than 50 ceiling fans and about 40 standing fans he said he purchased for patients.
Sa’ad also expressed concern over the condition of patients at the facility and demanded explanations regarding the missing items.
He said he had received reports that some of the mattresses were being moved between wards and insisted on seeing them.
The Nasarawa State Ministry of Health is expected to investigate the allegations, establish what happened to the donated equipment and determine those responsible.
