BREAKING: TINUBU APPROVES UP TO 80% SALARY INCREASE FOR ARMED FORCES

President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The new pay structure, which will benefit about 250,000 military personnel, will take effect from September 1, 2026, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga explained that the salary adjustment is structured to favour lower-ranking personnel, with the highest percentage increases going to junior officers and soldiers.

Under the new package, officers above the rank of colonel—including brigadier generals, major generals, lieutenant generals and generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.

Personnel from colonel to warrant officer will receive a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from the rank of private to staff sergeant will enjoy an 80 per cent salary boost.

The adjustment will increase the military’s annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional ₦264 billion.

Tinubu said the pay rise reflects the government’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in tackling terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.

He reaffirmed that improving troop welfare and modernising the military remain key priorities of his administration.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties,” he stated.

Emphasising the link between security and national development, Tinubu said no nation can attain greatness without ensuring the safety of its citizens.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he said.

The President urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s gratitude for their dedication and service to the nation.

“Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.
