Troops from Operation Udoka have taken down known strongholds used by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. They found weapons and other supplies that were likely used to make homemade bombs.

The operation, conducted on Saturday, August 22, 2026, was carried out in conjunction with the Maritime Component, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Anambra Vigilante Group.

The Nigerian Army said they carried out a planned attack at sunrise on key areas in Obene and Abator villages, which are part of the Ochuche and Umunankwo communities.

The Army reported that the suspected IPOB/ESN members started firing at the troops as they approached, but then left their positions and ran into the nearby areas.

The troops used stronger weapons to fight back and chased the fleeing members.
The Army noted that blood found along the path the group took during their escape suggested that some of them were hurt by gunfire.

During the chase, the troops killed one member of the group, while others ran away with the body of another member who had been killed.

The military said this attack successfully forced the group out of their strongholds, preventing them from using these places as safe bases to plan more attacks.

Following the operation, the troops consolidated their positions and intensified the search of surrounding areas to track fleeing members of the group and prevent them from regrouping elsewhere.

The Nigerian Army, working with other security agencies as part of Joint Task Force South East, said Operation Udoka is still focused on putting pressure on terrorist and criminal groups in the South-East.

They also mentioned that the operations will keep going to prevent these groups from finding safe places to hide, weaken their ability to operate, and make the area safer for people who follow the law and live in the community.
