TRUMP MOVES TO LABEL CERTAIN MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD “TERRORIST GROUP”

US President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order initiating the designation of select chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood an Islamist political organization as foreign terrorist organizations, specifically citing those in Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan.
The order stated that these chapters “participate in, facilitate, or support violent and destabilizing activities that negatively impact their own regions, U.S. citizens, and U.S. interests.
The Muslim Brotherhood, a pan-Islamist organization founded in Egypt in 1928, has since spread to other Arab countries. Its founder, Egyptian schoolteacher Hassan al-Banna, advocated for the revival of Islamic principles in society as a means for the Muslim world to resist Western colonial influence.
The U.S. designation of the group as a foreign terrorist organization would enable Washington to impose sanctions, including freezing any assets the group holds in the U.S. and barring entry to its members. The next step lies with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who are tasked with completing the process to officially outlaw the branches identified in the presidential order.
The Muslim Brotherhood is already banned in several countries, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia. In April 2025, Jordan also outlawed the group, accusing it of stockpiling weapons and plotting to destabilize the kingdom. Despite a 2020 ruling by Jordan’s top court to dissolve the organization, it had continued operating with considerable popularity, with authorities previously overlooking its activities. In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood has been banned since 2013, following the ousting of its leader and then-president Mohamed Morsi in a military coup led by then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Sisi has remained in power in Egypt since then, cultivating a strategic partnership with Washington.
Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, welcomed the decision on X on Monday, stating, “This is a significant move not only for Israel but also for neighboring Arab nations that have endured Muslim Brotherhood-linked terrorism for decades.”
Earlier in May, French President Emmanuel Macron instructed his government to develop measures aimed at curbing the influence and expansion of the Muslim Brotherhood in France.
