US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy after describing Norway as a “shit house country” during a campaign rally and saying he did not want Norwegian immigrants in the United States because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump made the remarks during a speech on Sunday in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of the crucial US midterm elections scheduled for November 3.

“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shit house country, actually,” he said.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has openly expressed his desire to win the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.

However, the award was given this year to South African judge and former United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay.

Trump criticised the committee’s decision, describing it as “a disgraceful and embarrassing decision” and insisting that he deserved the honour.

During Sunday’s rally, the US president said he would welcome immigrants from certain countries but exclude Norwegians because he had not received the Nobel Peace Prize.

“So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he said.

However, there has been no official indication of any new US immigration policy targeting Norwegian nationals.

Norway’s Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, responded to Trump’s remarks on Monday, emphasising the independence of the Nobel Committee.

“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering — and that is still the case,” Eide told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

Trump faced similar criticism in 2018, during his first presidential term, after reportedly using vulgar language to describe Haiti and some African countries.
