Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has said his public disagreement with fellow Nigerian singer Wizkid achieved its intended goal, insisting the debate raised important questions about preserving the legacy of his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Speaking during an appearance on TVC’s Your View programme, themed Inside the Mind of Seun Anikulapo-Kuti, the singer reflected on the controversial online exchange that sparked widespread conversations about Fela’s influence and legacy.

Asked whether the dispute with Wizkid accomplished anything, Seun said he believed it had.

“I think it achieved a lot,” he said.

According to him, his concern was that it was inconsistent for anyone to claim to uphold Fela’s ideals while allowing people around them to undermine the late icon’s reputation.

“It is still not acceptable for someone to claim to align with the ideals of a person while that person’s team consciously works to drag the person’s name down. That doesn’t make sense to me,” he said.

During the interview, Seun also dismissed questions about social media activist VeryDarkMan’s role in what some describe as the fight to liberate Nigeria.

When asked whether he believed VeryDarkMan was genuinely working to free the country, Seun declined to comment directly, suggesting the activist should be invited to answer such questions himself.

“You can invite him for an interview and ask him. He said he’s not political and that he’s doing charity,” he said.

Responding to another question on whether he considers himself arrogant, Seun rejected the description, saying authority comes from knowledge rather than personal pride.

The interview comes about six months after Seun Kuti and Wizkid’s online exchange generated widespread debate over Fela Kuti’s legacy and his influence on contemporary Nigerian music.
