Africa’s campaign at the WTT Champions Doha received an early blow as Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna and Egypt’s Hana Goda were eliminated from the singles events.
The $500,000 tournament, hosted at Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar, features the world’s top players in both men’s and women’s singles competitions.
Egypt’s Omar Assar was the first African player to exit, falling 3-1 to Japan’s Shunsuke Togami after struggling to counter his opponent’s pace and consistency.
Teenage sensation Hana Goda delivered a spirited performance against former world number one Zhu Yuling but ultimately lost 3-1. Goda impressed in the second game, winning 11-5, and narrowly lost the third 15-13 before Zhu secured the match with a 12-10 victory in the fourth. Analysts noted Goda’s maturity and competitiveness despite the loss.
Goda remains a standout figure in African table tennis, having previously reached the WTT Champions women’s singles quarterfinals in Montpellier 2024 and Frankfurt 2025, making her the only African to do so.
