15-YEAR-OLD BOY DROWNS IN JIGAWA POND

A 15-year-old boy, identified as Isah Muhammad, has drowned in a pond popularly known as Sterling Pond along Disina Road in Dutse, Jigawa State, sparking renewed concerns over the dangers of water-filled ponds during the rainy season.
The tragic incident was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, on Wednesday.
According to Tijjani, the command received a distress call at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, reporting that the teenager, a resident of Bokoto Quarters in Dutse, had drowned in the pond.
He said NSCDC personnel attached to the Takur Site Division immediately responded to the emergency, recovered the victim from the water and rushed him to the General Hospital in Dutse.
However, a medical doctor at the hospital confirmed that the teenager had died before or shortly after arriving at the facility.
Following the confirmation of his death, the victim’s body was released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The incident has reignited concerns among residents over the dangers posed by ponds and other water bodies, especially during the rainy season when rising water levels increase the risk of drowning.
A resident, Abdullahi Sani, described the incident as alarming, warning that the increased volume of water during the rainy season makes such ponds particularly hazardous for children and young people.
Another resident, Musa Nalayi, urged parents and guardians to keep children away from deep ponds, stressing that the tragedy should serve as a reminder of the need for greater caution around water bodies.
Reacting to the incident, the Jigawa State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, expressed condolences to the bereaved family, describing the death as an irreparable loss.
The command also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary exposure to ponds and other dangerous water bodies during the rainy season to prevent similar tragedies.
