FIRE SERVICE INTRODUCES MEDICAL SCHEME, INCREASES INTEREST-FREE LOAN TO ₦500,000 FOR PERSONNEL

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Adeyemi, has unveiled a new Medical Intervention Scheme and increased the Service’s interest-free loan facility from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000 as part of efforts to improve the welfare of personnel.
Adeyemi announced the initiatives on Tuesday during the inauguration of a Quarter Guard at the Federal Fire Service National Headquarters in Wuse, Abuja.
He said staff welfare has remained his top priority since assuming office, noting that the new measures were introduced to ease the financial burden on officers and boost morale across the Service.
According to the Controller-General, he declined a lavish reception planned in his honour by friends in Nigeria and abroad, choosing instead to redirect the funds towards purchasing mattresses and other essential welfare items for firefighters nationwide.
He explained that the newly introduced Medical Intervention Scheme was designed to subsidise healthcare costs for officers and men, while the interest-free loan facility was increased from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000 to provide greater financial support.
Adeyemi said the welfare initiatives had strengthened the commitment and motivation of personnel, citing the voluntary construction of the newly unveiled Quarter Guard by officers as evidence of renewed confidence in the Service’s leadership.
Describing the project as a historic milestone, he said it marked the first time officers had independently undertaken such an initiative without directives from management, driven solely by their belief in the Service’s vision.
The Controller-General also directed the Chairman of the Controller-General’s Awards Committee, DCG M.A. Tambari, to document the Quarter Guard project and other outstanding contributions by personnel across the country for formal recognition.
The Federal Fire Service has faced longstanding concerns over the welfare of its personnel, who often operate in hazardous conditions with limited access to adequate medical and financial support. Since taking office about a year ago, Adeyemi has introduced several reforms aimed at enhancing staff welfare, improving morale and strengthening institutional commitment.
