Sikiru Alimi’s goal, his second in as many home match pushed Remo Stars to third place on the log as the Ikenne based team continued their quest for a continental ticket in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
It was a win Coach Gbenga Ogunbote would describe as remarkable and praised his charges for delivering when it mattered most.
“This is a great win for the team. I am glad and delighted with the win as it now means that we cannot be relegated this season. It has been a remarkable season for us and the result of the teams around us motivated us to get this win today. With four games to go this season,we have our destiny in our hands. We will continue to fight to the end.
The MatchDay 34 clash against visiting Lobi Stars of Makurdi ended 3-1 in favour of Sky Blues. The defeat further compounding the visitors struggles to stave off the drop.
Alimi’s goal early in the first half against his former team set the tone for the win. The lanky striker shot to the bottom corner to leave goalkeeper Emeka Onyia stranded. It was the striker’s sixth goal this season after joining the team in mid-season.
Lobi Stars had fought back early in the second half and should have been level in the 56′ minute as Utim Godfrey header off Olamilekan Adams corner kick crashed against the upright. Goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel was clearly beaten. Their pressure eventually paid off at the hour mark as Odinaka Francis restored parity with a thumping header off Olamilekan Adams cross.
Remo Stars restored their lead four minutes later as Flying Eagles invitee Tolulope Ojo had space and time in the box to fire past an exposed Goalkeeper Onyia as the visitors tried to keep pace with the match.
Any hope of a fightback by the visitors extinguished as the duo of substitutes Lekan Adebayo and Samuel Anaekwe combined to cut open the visitors the defense to put Anaekwe through on goal. He found the keepers top right corner to seal the match for the home team.
Coach Baba Ganaru said he felt let down by his team but believes there is still plenty to fight for this season.
“It was not a good outing by my team. We thought we could get more from this trip to help our quest to remain in the top flight. We have four more matches to save our season. We have to keep believing”
Remo Stars lie third on the log with 53 points. One point ahead of Rangers International and Kwara United. They visit the Mohammed Dikko Stadium next as guest of Katsina United.
