MATCH FACTS: TUNISIA CRASHOUT DESPITE STUNNING 1-0 VICTORY | FRANCE, AUSTRALIA THROUGH TO LAST 16
Tunisia recorded a famous 1-0 victory over France on Wednesday but still crashed out of the World Cup after Australia inflicted a similar defeat on Denmark.
Jalel Kadri’s side needed Australia to drop points if they were to stand any chance of reaching the last-16, but Wahbi Khazri’s winner against France meant they did everything in their power to progress.
While it was not enough in the end, Tunisia did receive a late consolation when a last-gasp Antoine Griezmann equaliser was disallowed by VAR for offside.
MATCH
France had not lost a match in a major tournament (World Cup + EURO) since EURO 2016 final against Portugal (0-1 in extra time), ending a run of 13 games without a loss (W9 D4).
Wahbi Khazri is the first African player in World Cup history to score in three consecutive starts, while he has been directly involved in each of Tunisia’s last five goals at the tournament (3 goals, 2 assists).
African teams have now won five games at #Qatar2022, the most wins recorded by CAF teams at a single #FIFAWorldCup tournament in history.
Tunisia are the 3rd African country to beat the defending champions at a #FIFAWorldCup (after Senegal beat France in 2002 & Cameroon’s victory over Argentina in 1990).
