After threats to scuttle Nigeria’s general election, a leader of the Biafran separatist movement was detained in Finland, according to the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

According to the source, plainclothes police agents detained Simon Ekpa just before he was scheduled to speak with a filmmaker at his home in Lahti, southern Finland.

Although the reason for Mr. Ekpa’s arrest and his release date were not immediately known, the newspaper reported that the separatist provocateur was likely to undergo lengthy questioning. The cops claimed they were merely carrying out their duties in this case.

The arrest occurs as Mr. Ekpa steps up his efforts to thwart the February 25 presidential elections in Nigeria.

After IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu was kidnapped by Nigerian authorities in June 2021, Mr. Ekpa, 37, gained notoriety and assumed the role of de facto movement leader. He had issued a so-called “sit-at-home order,” warning South-East citizens to avoid polling places or face violent repercussions.

Also, the Nigerian government had pleaded with Finland to step in and stop Mr. Ekpa’s instigating broadcasts from the safety of Europe. It was unclear whether the police responded to Nigeria’s request or to the intense internet pressure from Igbo people, particularly those who support Peter Obi, an Igbo politician with increased popularity and a better chance of winning the presidency this cycle.

When contacted for comment, a spokesman for the Nigerian foreign ministry did not respond right away. It was impossible to reach the Finnish embassy in Abuja for comment.

Meanwhile, in a video, an unidentified man was heard saying “Simon Ekpa, the Nigerian guy who leaves in Lahti, who has been terrorizing Nigeria, has been arrested by the Finnish Police” while appreciating the security operatives for a Job well done.
