WHITNEY ADENIRAN’S DEATH: COURT GRANTS N60 MILLION BAIL TO 3 CHRISLAND SCHOOL STAFF, ONE VENDOR

Justice Oyindamola Ogala, has granted N60 million bail to three Chrisland school staff and a vendor in connection to the death of  Adeniran Omodesola Whitney, who died during the school’s inter-house sport competition.

The affected staff are Kuku Fatai, Belinda Amao, Nwatu Victoria and Ademoye Adewale the vendor (Candy Flux Operator).

They were charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless and negligent acts which led to the death of the student.

In her ruling on the bail request, the court granted the first and second defendants, N10 million in bail each with two sureties of like sums.

She also agreed to set the bail for the third and fourth accused at N20 million each, with two additional sureties of like sum.

All sureties, according to the judge, must be in productive employment, possess reliable documentation of their financial situation, and be residents of the area covered by the court.

“All the sureties must have two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must submit their international passports with the Chief registrar of the state high court,” Ogala said.

The court also, ordered the defense counsel to write an undertaken in order for the defendants to be released to them before the perfection of their bail.

Earlier in the proceeding, the Lagos State government filed charges against Chrisland School, a number of its employees, and a vendor before the state high court in Ikeja.

According to the charge information created by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr. Jide Martins, Adeniran Omodesola Whitney was killed by reckless and negligent behavior that put her life in danger on 9th February, 2023 at around 1 p.m. in Agege Sports Stadium, Agege, Lagos, in the Ikeja Judicial Division.

The Attorney General of the State, Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN, told the court during the arraignment that the state had brought two counts of charges against them urging the court to accept their plea.

However, the suspects entered a plea of not guilty to the accusations made against them.

The Attorney General then informed the court that the state had seventeen witnesses and would be requesting a date to begin the trial.

While in the dock, the school’s principal, Mrs. Belinda Amao, broke down in tears as the court and counsel tried to agree on a date for the commencement of the trial.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala, who presided over the matter, fixed May 25, June 1, 8, and 15 for commencement of trial.
