UPDATE: SENATE APPROVES ESTABLISHMENT OF SOUTH WEST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION

Read Time:47 Second

The South West Development Bill has been passed for a third reading by the upper legislative body following a report provided by Kaka Shehu Lawan, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties.

He said, “If the commission is established through presidential assent, it will like other development-driven commissions receive funds from the federation account, donations from development partners, etc, to address infrastructural deficits and tackle ecological problems in the region”.

The measure, which was read for the second time in February 2024, will administer monies given by the Federal Government for capital projects in the Southwest region.

It is also responsible for receiving and managing monies granted by the Federal Government for the construction, restoration, and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damages sustained by the region.

The commission is also required to address ecological issues and other relevant environmental or developmental obstacles in order to expedite the socioeconomic development of the South West states.
